Tangled Timelines

Wyvern's Warrior, #5 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeOne of the interesting things for me about the Incendium series is how the stories lead to each other and connect to each other. Usually, I wrote series in which each book follows the previous one in the chronology of the world. The sequence is linear. Incendium has never been like that. It started with Nero’s Dream. Characters meet before it’s time for their own story, usually to share details that explain more of the world. Characters tell stories about what happened in the past – that includes Nero, Arista, Kraw (although he was outed by the ShadowCaster), and Celo. 2018 seems to be the year of the world guide for me, so I’m compiling lists and spreadsheets like mad. While there are several ongoing references already compiled for this series – see Guides to Incendium – this week, I’ve been charting out the full chronology of Incendium as told to date. That’s also helping me to plan the rest of the series in greater detail and make sure I don’t leave anything out.

So, here’s a fun Incendium fact for you: the chronologies of Wyvern’s Warrior, Wyvern’s Outlaw and Wyvern’s Angel overlap.

Wyvern's Outlaw, #7 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeIn Wyvern’s Warrior, Anguissa returns to Incendium on her ship, the Archangel. She then helps Acion and Thalina escape. About a heartbeat later 🙂 the Archangel encounters the ship of Captain Hellemut again. Anguissa leaves the Archangel, while Acion and Thalina continue their story.

But Anguissa’s story (Wyvern’s Outlaw) starts when she leaves the Archangel. She meets Ryke on Captain Hellemut’s ship and recognizes him as the Carrier of the Seed.

Meanwhile, back on Incendium, Bond and Percipia’s story (Wyvern’s Angel) starts with the Archangel’s return to port. In fact, Bond has already left the starport by the time we meet Anguissa in Wyvern’s Warrior. This is kind of bending my mind a bit, but it is fun.

Wyvern's Angel, #9 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeI’ve also realized that these three dragon shifter princesses will all be meeting their destined mate, falling in love, and getting pregnant at the same time. The birth of three royal babies in rapid succession certainly calls for a party.

In Wyvern’s Mate, the High Priestess of Nimue arrived to bless the baby. Who will arrive on Incendium to bless these three children? Or will they be given wishes instead? And what about Gemma’s child? Once again, I have a second generation of shifters to accommodate in my paranormal world. The short story after Wyvern’s Angel will be about the party for those three babies.

More details to come!

Wyvern’s Angel

Wyvern's Angel, #9 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeI’ve moved the publication date for Wyvern’s Angel into May. It turns out that the Pyr – my Dragonfire shifters – are consuming a lot of my time, as I prepare the new editions of the first eight Dragonfire books. We have a system now, and are past the halfway point, but Wyvern’s Angel isn’t written yet.

Boo. I’m not thrilled about making this change, but reality sometimes bites.

If you pre-ordered at Nook, please cancel your pre-order and wait for the new link. I unpublished the book there but a new buy link will reappear closer to the publication date. I’m changing the distribution method for getting my books at Nook. This shouldn’t be your issue, but I learned this week that Nook will merrily fulfil pre-orders for books that have been unpublished, even if there isn’t a book file. Gah. Better that you cancel the order now, rather than try to get a refund in April. I’m trying to get them to sort this out at the back end, but the easiest solution is for you to cancel your pre-order.

Pinterest Boards

Wyvern's Angel, #9 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeI’ve been plotting, which also means I’ve been playing on Pinterest. My boards have moved around a bit, since Pinterest now allows them to be nested – instead of each book having its own board, each book is a section within a board dedicated to each series. (I think this is pretty cool.)

I updated the board for the Dragons of Incendium. You can find it right here.

I still have my board Dragons for illustrations and other matters dragon-related. You can find it right here.

Changing Links at Nook

Wyvern's Angel, #9 of the Dragons of Incendium series of paranormal romances by Deborah CookeI’ve changed the way my books get to Barnes and Noble and this means that the links for them have changed in the Nook store. The links are all updated here on the site.

The one exception is Wyvern’s Angel. It was up for pre-order at Nook and the new link isn’t live yet. Some of you had placed orders for it, but I want to make sure that you can get updated versions of the ebook. I’ve cancelled the existing pre-order at Nook, so your order will be cancelled, too. When the new link is live (which will be very close to publication date), I’ll let you know. Then you can order that version, which will ensure that you get any updates to the book.

I’ll let you know when that link is up, both here on the blog and in the Dragons and Angels newsletter. 🙂

Changes to My Newsletter

I’ve made some changes to my newsletter, in order to make a fresh start in the new year.

First, the newsletter will come from a new email address. Please add deborah AT deborahcooke DOT com to your address book. The next newsletters will go out the week of the 26th and you might need to look for them in your spam folder (or promotion folder if you use gmail) because of the changed sender address.

Second, I changed newsletter service providers. The main difference on your end is that the newsletter will look different. I’m still playing with the design!

Third, I stopped all of the automations and simplified them. Each of the groups below now has a single welcome message when you sign up.

(I realized later that if you’d subscribed in the last couple of weeks, I probably cut off your welcome sequence. 😦 I apologize for that, but the fact that I made this mistake is yet more proof that things had gotten too complicated.)

Fourth, I eliminated the dedicated series lists. They seemed like a good idea, but were proving hard to maintain. I needed to simplify things so I can write more.

Fifth, I eliminated the All the News option. Compiling this newsletter was a problem as it always exceeded the maximum size for the email.

Sending too long of a newsletter means several things:
• the long newsletter will be truncated by some email servers, which has to be annoying to subscribers;
• the truncation cuts off the footer. This means that the bit of code that tracks whether the newsletter is opened hasn’t even been delivered, so it can’t be triggered, so the information about open rates is just wrong.
• my previous provider also had some issues with reporting when subscribers read the newsletter on their phones. Given how many people who do that, I had no faith in the data.

There are lots of sexy things you can do to resend to subscribers who haven’t opened the newsletter or to re-engage with subscribers, but if the open data is wrong, then those really aren’t possibilities anymore.

The new set-up is much like the old in that there are three groups in my list:

Dragons & Angels is the newsletter for my Deborah Cooke paranormal romances. Subscribers were added to this list who had chosen Deborah’s paranormal romances in the old list, and also if they had joined the Dragons of Incendium list.

Heroes & Bad Boys is the newsletter for my Deborah Cooke contemporary romances. Subscribers were added to this list who had chosen Deborah’s contemporary romances in the old list, and also if they had joined the Flatiron Five list.

Knights & Rogues is the newsletter for my Claire Delacroix medieval romances. Subscribers were added to this list who had chosen Claire’s medieval romances in the old list, and also if they had joined any of the medieval romance series lists (like the one for the Champions of St. Euphemia).

Those subscribers who had chosen to receive All the News were added to all three groups.

For 2018, each group will get a newsletter when there’s news about relevant books. I’m going to focus more on new releases. Subscribers will get a 30% discount on many new releases for shopping in my online store – this offer will only last a short time around the launch date. The transaction will be processed in my Selz store and the book will be delivered by BookFunnel, who will ensure that the book is delivered and ready to be read on the device of choice.

I’m pretty happy with this change and how well the transition went. Be aware that managing your group membership is a little different. On the old service, you could update your preferences and change which groups you belonged to. On the new service, when you choose to unsubscribe, you can leave specific groups or leave the list completely. To join new groups, you need to use the links above to subscribe to them.

My next newsletters will be delivered by the new service from the new address. Look for Dragons & Angels on December 26, Knights & Rogues on December 27, and Heroes & Bad Boys on December 28. They might end up in your spam or promotions folder this first time, so keep an eye out for them.

I have a lot of new ideas for the newsletter for 2018 and am looking forward to this fresh start!
